This was one of my earliest paintings — and in many ways she will always hold a special place in my heart because of it. She is a young girl from rural Iran, caught in an unguarded moment. Maybe she's just come in from the fields. Maybe she's been playing. It doesn't really matter. What matters is that look on her face — pure, uncomplicated happiness.

She represents something I find myself returning to again and again in my work — the beauty of a simple life. A life uncluttered by noise, lived close to the earth, full of small joys. There is a goodness in her that feels almost rare in the modern world.

This painting reminds me that beauty doesn't need to be complicated. It just needs to be real.
