This boy from rural Iran is one of my favourite paintings I have ever made. There is something about him that I can't explain — a life force, a spark, a joy that radiates right through the canvas. He's wearing a hand-me-down plaid shirt that has clearly seen better days, and he couldn't care less. He is rich in every way that actually matters.

He posed for whoever took this photograph with the confidence of someone who owns the room. And now, years and miles later, he owns every wall he hangs on too.

I painted him because faces like his deserve to be celebrated. Rural Iran, ordinary life, extraordinary spirit.
